This weekend past, Cities in Pixie Dust went to the South Philly Biennial, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, and rain-delayed until Sunday.

I really can’t say a whole lot about the experience, and actually describe it properly. You really had to be there. It was part Alice in Wonderland acid trip and part community art festival. A friend of mine walked by serendipitously, and had to leave because “I can’t handle this right now… It’s tripping me out…” Think glitter and rainbows meet saxophone versions of “Sweet Child of Mine” and Black Dog. Live Band Karaoke, tea tent, paper mache clusterf*ck and face painting. Plus a surprise solo acapella performance from the guy from the band “The Homosexuals.” Or as the kid who sang Danzig’s “Mother” during Live Band Karaoke said about the art, “What is all this stuff? It’s SO WEIRD!!!!” You really had to be there.

So, below the cut is some video!

We are seeking to learn more about the artists who are always painting and repainting the walls around Federal and 19th Streets. Some of these tags are so beautiful and intricate that they are hard to read.

Cities in Pixie Dust is a big fan of art you can access in the everyday world, without going too far out of your way to see it - such as street art, graffiti, murals, stickers, found art, etc. Cities are places where people interact with each other. Sometimes they choose to interact with each other, and sometimes they’re forced into it.

So many people in the city go about their day with a hustle and bustle and don’t have time to look around. Street artists take the time to make something and put it where everyone can see, on the sly, while trying not to get caught “defacing” property. Some people would call a lot of street art a criminal act and not a work of art, but CPD disagrees. There is a lot of stuff you could do to get yourself into trouble, but painting on a wall or sign is probably amongst the lesser evil things out there.

Recently, and we don’t know how we’ve missed this site for so long, CPD stumbled upon an amazing blog on the Village Voice – Camille Dodero’s Streetscape Blog. So you should go check it out.

And here are some pix of street art that CPD has stumbled upon in the recent past. There will be more to come. Or hit up the flickr for graffiti and murals…
